EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
