Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, this album may look more like a difficult academic quiz rather than the latest popular music album from a musician who just had a previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken across 4 separate sections and sung in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying classical-tinged work that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of other artists seem quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, and sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds and the present, its scale are much higher here, with the balancing act more dramatic. What really raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly on the stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds in like comedic force. The song then shifts into the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite understand—or even wish to know—where you will go to next."

Almost every track finishes in a totally distinct place than where it began. A track explores the transient nature of fame with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins off moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that it has become the artist's first work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies while it spirals skyward. That trick gets repeated by another powerful track that expands and contracts, weaving layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes patience to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
