The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
