Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
