Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
